Ruby Star Society's Moonglow Inspiration

By Remy Nixon, March 4, 2023

Introducing Moonglow! Another week, a new Ruby Star Society quilting fabric collection coming into the shop. These things sometimes come in threes, and personally, out of Achroma, Curio, and Moonglow this one might be my favorite (don't tell the package of fabric currently on its way to my house though).

This is a classic Alexia Abegg collection featuring warm saturated colors and block-printing inspired patterns.  I don't know if it's the current weather or what, but I'm loving the warm earth-y-ness of this collection - I can just imagine curling up under one of these quilts with a cup of tea watching the rain falling on fresh spring leaves outside. In case you haven't already grabbed yourself some of this collection yet, you can shop for Moonglow here.

Now, we didn't end up getting the full fabric collection in the shop, choosing to focus on the big prints and pairing them with coordinating Speckled prints that we currently have in stock. But oh my, these big prints! I can't wait to see them in some tote bags, skirts, or button-up shirts!

If you want to mock-up your own quilts using these (or any other) fabrics check out the free Quilt Mock-Up Tool.

Okay, okay - on to the quilts:

The Swatch Quilt

Ruby Star Society Swatch Quilt in Moonglow

Ruby Star Society is gearing up for a Spring Sew-Along with this quick quilt! The pattern is free and a great way to show off some of the bigger prints in this collection.

This quilt finishes at 48" x 60" and uses 1/3 of a yard of each of the following fabrics:

Omega - Small-Throw Size

Omega Bolt Quilt in Moonglow

I love the subtle movement in the Omega pattern from Miss Make. This quilt design uses a single fabric for the "light" tones, and a scrappy arrangement for the "dark" tones.

This quilt finishes at 60" x 60" and takes the following fabrics to recreate (buy the FQ bundle for this quilt here):

Clava - Baby Size

Baby sized Clava Quilt in MoonglowI love the drama of the big bold curves in the Clava Baby quilt, to me it looks like the moon's reflection on the water.

This quilt finishes at 39" x 48" and uses the following fabrics to recreate it:

Clava - Throw Size

Throw sized Clava Quilt in Moonglow

Here's the bigger-sized Clava Quilt! It's incredible how you can take the same shapes and the same fabrics and create a totally different feel. I like putting a larger-scale pattern in that full-circle to really showcase it.

This quilt finishes at 57" x 57" and uses the following fabrics to recreate it:

The Picnic Quilt

Ruby Star Society Picnic Quilt in Moonglow

This one was Ruby Star Society's Summer Quilt-Along from 2022. So cool how the combination of one light fabric, one dark fabric and then a bunch of medium tones come together to make this scrappy, but not overwhelming quilt!

This quilt finishes at 67.5" x 67.5" and uses the following fabrics to recreate it (buy the FQ bundle for this quilt here):

Booths Corner - Throw Size

Booths Corner Quilt in Moonglow

I love the repeating arrangement of shapes in Toad & Sew's Booth's Corner. I had a hard time choosing what mock-up to include for this pattern because I made a few and really liked two. So, I'm including them both! First up we have (my favorite color-scheme) Navy and Mustard. Ooooh! Aaaah!

This pattern finishes at 68" x 68" and uses the following fabrics to recreate it:

Here's the second colorway! Replacing the dark yellow with this nice purple. Let me know which one is your favorite!

This pattern finishes at 68" x 68" and uses the following fabrics to recreate it:

Crumb Coat - Large-Throw Size

Large Throw sized Crumb Coat Quilt in Moonglow

Taralee's Crumb Coat Quilt is usually a great way to use a Layer Cake (10" x 10" squares), but this variation has 4 blocks of each color, so you could do it with 1/3 yards or a 10" cut of each color instead!

This pattern finishes at 67" x 67" and uses the following fabrics to recreate it:

Wyld Whirl Quilt

Wyld Whirl Quilt in Moonglow

Last but not least we have the Wyld Whirl Quilt! A link to a digital copy of this pattern is included with all of our Fat-Quarter bundles. This is a great first quilt and a fun make!

Again, I'm sharing two colorways of this pattern. This first one uses only the big prints from Moonglow, and even though it's chaotic I think it actually works!

This mock-up finishes at 42" x 56", but with this many Fat Quarters you could make it bigger. To recreate it you'll need 1 Fat Quarter of (buy the FQ bundle to make this quilt here):

This second Wyld Whirl all the prints from Moonglow that we'll have in the shop AND all the coordinating Speckled colors we currently have in stock.

These mockups are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to things that you all can create with the Moonglow collection from Ruby Star Society! If you end up recreating any of these quilts, we would love to see them! You can always share your makes with us on Instagram or send us over an email. We can't wait to see what you will create!
