Intro to Garment Making



Class Duration: 2 hours

Students Bring: Students are encouraged to bring their own notebook and pen for taking notes.

Materials included with Registration: We will have a class hand out for everyone that includes terminology definitions and bullet points of what we'll go over.

Skill Level: Beginner – No sewing experience

Age Range: Adults and Teens 16+

Description: This workshop is the perfect place to start if you've been wanting to sew your own clothes! We'll use a few different patterns to cover everything you need to know before you work on your first garment.

You will leave with: While we won't do any sewing in this class, you will leave class with the knowledge needed to start your garment project at home. This is an information heavy class, please come ready to listen and ask lots of questions!

In this course we'll go over:

  •        Paper vs PDF patterns
  •        Printing PDF patterns and assembling them
  •        Measuring yourself to determine size
  •        Grading between sizes
  •        Best practices for prepping and cutting fabric
  •        How to transfer markings
  •        What different markings mean
  •        Terminology overview of pattern instructions like edge stitching, matching notches, attaching facings etc.
  •        Different options for seam finishes.

Instructor: Katie Lewandowski
Instructor Bio: For ten years Katie was a middle school Art Educator before transitioning into making full time. Everything she makes currently is fibered based, and she loves experimenting with new way to manipulate and alter fabrics. In addition to fiber arts, Katie explores printmaking, fabric painting, marbling, quilting, natural dying with mushrooms, weaving, and embroidery! ⁠
